877 days since the #quarantine was announced in #Venezuela due to the #covid19 #pandemic, with no clear end in sight for the situation, anyway. I am at home this Sunday and I try to relax, as usual, all the services have been failing or working irregularly, but eventually one gets used to it and accepts that this is the reality at hand. I guess that's why I like to distract my mind looking for things from #WorldHistory to share and record the day. For today, the anniversary is about a birth:
On August 7, 1876 Mata Hari was born in Leeuwarden (Holland). Her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, she was a dancer, courtesan, and (the occupation for which she is most remembered) a spy during World War I.
After an early marriage, which began with her responding to a newspaper ad, #MataHari lived for a time in Indonesia with her husband and children, but although she was enchanted by the culture and exotic dances, her family life did not was satisfactory, with the death of her husband and one of her children, she decided to return to Europe, but not as a widow of a Dutch naval officer, but invented a new identity and presented herself as a dancer, created a whole new image and played with orientalist fantasies that fit very well with the taste of the time.
When the #FirstWorldWar broke out, she was in artistic presentations in Berlin, thanks to her contacts she was able to find a safe conduct to return to Holland, but she started spying for the Germans, for which she was arrested by the French, and they recruited her as a double-spy, but then the doubt remains, because it seems that she continued working for the Germans and when she was caught again by the French forces, this time she was executed.
It has always intrigued me how much fantasy there is in this image of the femme fatale and how much truth there is in it, it intrigues me to think to what extent she was really an efficient spy or was she rather a disposable piece that was used by the military forces from both sides and, when they judged that her life was no longer useful, they charged her with espionage and blamed her for their failures, to later kill her and free themselves from being investigated for their defeats.
I suppose I will never know, so I am left with the image of her as a transgressive woman. #Mata #Hari, a widow who was not satisfied with being one and recreated herself until she became a dream woman, a woman who aroused passions and shared a bed with prominent figures from the military, political and business spheres of their context.

877 días desde que se anunció la #Cuarentena en #Venezuela por la #pandemia de #covid19, sin tener claro un final a la vista cercana para la situación, en fin. Estoy en casa este domingo y trato de relajarme, como es frecuente, todos los servicios han estado fallando o trabajando de manera irregular, pero uno a la larga se acostumbra y acepta que esa es la realidad que se tiene a mano. Supongo que por eso es que me gusta distraer la mente buscando cosas de la #Historia mundial para compartir y hacer el registro del día. Para hoy, la efeméride es sobre un nacimiento:
El 7 de agosto de 1876 nació Mata Hari, en Leeuwarden (Holanda). Su nombre real era Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, fue bailarina, cortesana y (la ocupación por la que se le recuerda más) espía durante la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Luego de un matrimonio temprano, que se inició con ella respondiendo a un anuncio publicado en un periódico, vivió un tiempo en Indonesia con su esposo e hijos, pero a pesar de que quedó encantada con la cultura y las danzas exóticas, su vida familiar no era satisfactoria, con la muerte de su esposo y uno de sus hijos, se decidió a regresar a Europa, pero no como una viuda de un oficial de la marina holandesa, sino que inventó una nueva identidad y se presentó como bailarina, creó toda una nueva imagen y jugó con las fantasías orientalistas que encajaron muy bien con el gusto de la época.
Cuando estalló la #PrimeraGuerraMundial, ella estaba en presentaciones artísticas en Berlín, gracias a sus contactos pudo encontrar un salvoconducto para regresar a Holanda, pero comenzó a espiar para los alemanes, por lo que fue arrestada por los franceses y ellos la reclutaron como doble-espía, pero luego queda la duda, pues pareciera que ella siguió trabajando para los alemanes y al ser atrapada de nuevo por las fuerzas francesas, esta vez si la ejecutaron.
Siempre me ha intrigado que tanto de fantasía hay en esta imagen de mujer fatal y que tanto de verdad hay en ella, me intriga pensar hasta qué punto en verdad fue una espía eficiente o fue más bien una pieza desechable que fue usada por las fuerzas militares de ambos bandos y, cuando juzgaron que ya no era útil su vida, le achacaron cargos por espionaje y le cargaron las culpas de sus fracasos, para luego matarla y librarse ellos de ser investigados por sus derrotas.
Supongo que nunca lo sabré, así que me queda la imagen de ella como una mujer trasgresora, una viuda que no se conformó con serlo y se recreó a sí misma hasta convertirse en una mujer de ensueño, una mujer que despertó pasiones y compartió cama con personajes destacados del ámbito militar, político y empresarial de su contexto.
